DOLLY MADISON RULES AND TABLE OF PENALTIES
Revised: AUG 2005

The team assembles at the starting line with Dolly wearing a dress and a wig. Dolly and her team are given the names of two items that must be saved from the White House and the state to which each item must be taken. At the starting signal, team members run to their respective homes -Dolly to the White House, one team member to Maryland and the other to Virginia. On arriving in their respective states, Dolly's helpers each don a dress, a wig and a purse and then race to the White House. Each must cross a hazard located in the path - a ferry across the Potomac on the Virginia side and a fence and brambles across the Maryland fields. Dolly, has hopefully located her items in the White House trunk, hands them off to the appropriate team member. Her helpers hurry to their respective states, drop off their treasures and then scuttle back to the White House to help Dolly escape. The entire team flees the White House for Virginia by ferry; with the prostrate Dolly having to be carried to the ferry and then across the finish line. The team completing the course in the shortest time wins!

GENERAL RULES

  1. A team is composed of three individuals in any mix of gender
  2. Each member of the team must be at least eighteen years of age and must provide a picture ID if asked.
  3. A signed waiver of liability must be on file for each member of the team.
  4. A $30.00 non-refundable entry fee is required for each team. All proceeds from entry fees are donated to a charity identified by ASGRA.
  5. Contestants may pre-register at the Friday evening Contestant Registration between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM. Contestants and spectators may also register at the Hotel Hospitality Booth Friday or Saturday evenings or at the Fairgrounds all day Saturday and until 11:30 AM on Sunday, the day of the race.
  6. All contestants are expected to be present for the explanation of rules immediately preceding the race. ASGRA and/or the race coordinator reserve the right to modify or change rules when such action is considered by them to be necessary or in the best interest of the event. Notice of any modification or change in rules will be made during the explanation of rules immediately preceding the race.
  7. Team order will be determined by random drawing.
  8. Timing will be conducted by at least two timers and recorded by a scorekeeper. The fastest recorded time from the starting signal until all three contestants have crossed the finish line will be used as the team's best time. Penalty time, if assessed, will be added to the team's best time to give the Official Time.
  9. There are no protests and the decision of the judge is final.

PROPER GROOMING FOR THE RACE…

  1. From the start and throughout the event, the contestant representing Dolly Madison must wear a dress, a wig, and carry a purse. The dress must be properly worn over the head before proceeding onto the course. The wig must be worn on the head. Should the wig not fit properly, a contestant may hold it on his/her head. In either case, the wig-whether worn or held-must remain on the contestant's head at all times. If the wig falls off, it must be placed back on the head before the contestant can continue running the course. Forward progress without the wig is prohibited.
  2. From the moment they don costume in their respective states until the team crosses the finish line, the contestants assisting Dolly must wear a dress, a wig and carry a purse. Otherwise, the same rules of dress that apply to Dolly, also apply to her teammates.

MINDING YOUR MANNERS WHILE RUNNING THE RACE…

  1. All three contestants must start the race from within the starting box.
  2. Dolly's helpers must always negotiate the hazard whenever traveling between the White House and their respective states. All three contestants must negotiate the ferry hazard during the final flight from the White House to the finish line.
  3. When negotiating the fence hazard, the contestant's body must pass over the top of the crossbeam and between the end posts. The contestant may not detour around the fences nor climb through or under the crossbeam. When negotiating the bramble hazard, the contestant's body must pass under or through the bramble obstacle. The contestant may not detour around or jump over the bramble hazard.
  4. When negotiating the ferry, the contestants must remain on the ferry platform. Only the rope can be used to propel the ferry!
  5. Only Dolly is permitted to search the trunk. Dolly must hand all items to her helpers from within the White House area that is defined by the four corner columns.
  6. Contestants may enter or leave the White House only through the "front door" that is defined by the two columns directly opposite the starting box.
  7. Contestants will be informed of the articles to be retrieved and the state to which they must be taken. Care should be taken to prevent damage to the items or injury to themselves. Items must be placed on the barrel provided for that purpose.
  8. At the conclusion of each race, items will be returned to the trunk.
  9. Dolly must be carried the full distance from the White House to the ferry and from the end of the ferry, across the finish line. Dolly's flight from the White House, aided by her helpers, must begin from "front door" of the White House.
